The Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge in Austin Texas.

When the first Spanish explores happened upon the beautiful terraced hills of northwest Austin, the named the the land Balcones.  The unique limestone hills an spring-fed canyons create a natural refuge and nesting habitat for the endangered Golden-Cheeked  Warbler and the Black-Capped Viero.  Two lovely little birds that rely on this special park for its continuing existence. The refuge is also on the route of a major migration corridor  for Monarch butterflies moving southward to their winter homes in central Mexico.

The Balcones Refuge was established in 1992 and consists of more than 80,000 acres.

The vegetation of the Balcones National ildlife Refuge incudes various Elms, Oaks, Juniper and Cedar trees. 
The refuge offers visitors guided nature walks, workshops and particpation in various birding surveys and is open year-round.
