According to a new study, just released by the Austin Chamber of Commerce, a medical school in Austin would create over 19,000 jobs in the area. The jobs, of course, would then translate to revenue in our already booming economy.
The feasibility study, as reported in the Austin Business Journal, looked at the possible impact of both a UT-linked medical school and Texas A&M University’s plans for an "academic medical school in Round Rock." The thought is to undermine any competition, bring Austin into the forefront, and combine both schools on one campus.
No firm plans are yet in place, as costs for just the building could exceed $500 million, but it’s important to note that with all the tech jobs available, medical technology is a shortfall currently in Texas. Once legislation and funding are in place, Austin may be part of yet another Texas breakthru: the first top-tier joint medical school and research campus in the state.
