Individuals Going Through a Divorce Affected by Housing Crisis

According to Morning Call, one faction of the country especially affected by the national housing crisis is made up of couples going through divorce.  Due to the slow market and dropping prices, divorce settlements based on property investments are often stagnating.

One example the newspaper provides describes a family (in Connecticut) who has had their house on the market for eight months, lowering the price by over $40,000.  The lack of liquid assets means that one spouse is forced to live in a small, furnished home nearby.  Hardly an ideal situation for the couple’s seven-year old daughter.

Austin’s strong real estate market, and stronger job market, gives hope to residents that such hardships are often far away.  In fact, new developments in South and Southeast Austin offer affordable, family-friendly, and community-centered housing.
