Historic Neighborhood Near Downtown to get New Homes

The developer of the project, just east of Downtown, will blend new amenities with old fashioned charm

The El Centro Group, an Austin-based developer, purchased a piece of land along Waller Street, between 13th and 14th Streets.  Their goal was to build five new homes on the block, keeping the aesthetics consistent with the 100-year-old Palmquist House next door.

According to the Austin Business Journal, the homes will have recycled wood floors, antique doors and other historically accurate features.  They will also, however, be four-or five-star rated for energy conservation, with modern amenities like tankless water heaters and spray-in insulation.

The homes will be priced $580,000 to $760,000 and in sizes ranging from 1,789 to 2,380 square feet.  And, in keeping with the character of a historic neighborhood, each home will be one-of-a-kind.  Work is nearing completion on all the houses, including renovation of the existing Palmquist House.
