Tiny Harthan Street boasts big status, the first district to be approved as a local historic district. Located just north of Wet Sixth Street and west of Lamar Boulevard. Last weekend the Heritage Society of Austin hosted a walking tour of the area.
This historic status provides zoning that protects older buildings from demolition and insures that architecturally incompatible construction is prevented from being allowed in a historical district. It also guarantees the character and architectural integrity of a historic area.
Two houses on Harthan Street also boasts a City of Austin Landmark designation. The oldest house on Harthan Street was built in 1875.
