Developers Begin Bidding on Downtown Redevelopment Site

Proposals from development groups across the country are due on April 30 in order to be considered for the honor of recreating the old water treatment plant at West Cesar Chavez and San Antonio streets.  The city is considering offers in a couple of unprecedented ways: the bidding process is moving faster than usual and the conference with City Council was videostreamed so that it could be viewed out-of-state.

The six-acre site is expected to revive that area of downtown as an urban village, with housing, shopping, offices, and attractions.  The development is also going to eventually house a new central library and a new home for KLRU, according to the American Statesman

Although the article hints that funding could be an issue, with the winning developer expected to shell out over $18 million to extend streets and cover utility work, none of the many bidding companies seem deterred.
