A barren 16-acre field in Bastop has been reforested with 55,000 loblolly pine trees. In eighty years time the trees will reach full maturity and that barren field will be a paradise.
This is part of an important reforestation project on many of the newly acquired land parcels located near Bastrop State Park. This is one of the first projects of this scope since the 1930′s. Areas that were clear-cut of trees to produce pastures for grazing are trying to return the land back to what it was like a hundred years ago.
The whole project will plant 55,000 loblolly pine trees, a prevalent southeastern tree that can reach heights of over 100 feet on 118 acres in Bastrop. They also plan to do this again on another part of the park next year as well.
The project will also give valuable habitat to the endangered Houston toad.
