Austin Continues to Go Green

Austin city council is working on measures to extend the current green movement to existing structures.  According to the Austin Business Journal, the new standards may require resale homes and commercial buildings to comply with energy efficient upgrades.

Until the newly-created task force was created, only new construction has been required to include things like efficient water heaters and fixtures.  However, Mayor Will Wynn’s Climate Protection Plan is moving Austin into the green.

The draft ordinance is expected by August of 2008, and is being developed by a group of stakeholders.  The new regulations will most likely include code changes and incentive programs.  The goal is for existing structures to comply with the new standards before being eligible for resale.
