A bird, a plane, a stack of pancakes?

Austin living at it’s very finest! The upcoming Red Bull Flugtag event, taking
place on August 25 at Auditorium Shores, is a soaring example of Austin’s quirky
sense of humor.

Flugtag,
meaning "flying day" in German, has invited teams to create and pilot there own
flying machines off a 22-foot high ramp. The goal? To go the distance,
literally, as teams are judged based on three factors: distance, creativity and
showmanship. Thirty teams composed of up to five members each will put their
heads together to create the most eye-catching, creative flying apparatus. In
fact, most of them will not be shaped like anything we’ve seen fly (or plummet)
before. Anything goes, and the wilder the contraption, the higher the point
value. As for showmanship, each team is allowed one precious minute in the
spotlight, just before launch. They should use this time to entertain the crowd,
thus insuring points with the judges.

Each craft must
be entirely human powered, be less than 30 feet wide, and weigh less than 450
pounds (including the pilot!) Winning teams are eligible for hefty prizes
including flight lessons (some of them sure need it), skydiving lessons (using
parachutes instead of structures), and paragliding lessons (without crashing

Since the
first Red Bull Flugtag was held in Vienna, Austria in 1991, there have been more
than 35 more across the globe. To top it off? Over 50,000 spectators came to
watch when the event was at Auditorium Shores in 2003. Not only did Austin
welcome the competition again, they did so with open arms (open wings?).
